CHAPTER ELEVEN

Oz raised his head off the floor of the trailer, neck spines flaring. Sitting silent against the side of the U-Haul, Adric went stiff and still.

"That sounds . . . bad," James said cautiously. He couldn't help thinking of that desperate scramble out of the woods, and the haunting feeling that he wasn't alone. The gun was inert now, with nothing visibly glowing, but there was a kind of alert expectancy to it, as if it was content now that it had gotten his attention to merely wait for what came next. James wanted to think he was anthropomorphizing, but after all she had told him about the gun, he no longer thought so. There was something alive in there.

"Untie me," Roos snapped, holding out her bound hands. "You'll want all the help you can get."

"First tell me how this works. The faster you fill me in, the less danger, right? How does it work? What are the chances they followed me here?"

Roos drew in a breath through her nose, visibly getting control of herself. "Every time you worldwalk, a tiny rip in reality is created, and it lingers for a little while afterwards. Some creatures can find their way through. Elementals can, and so can chaosians, particularly if they watched you travel and think they can find their prey wherever you went. Did one of them see you go?"

"Um," James said. "Oz, can you go up and take a look around?"

Oz opened his mouth to reply when there was an abrupt thump on the top of the U-Haul. James raised the spellgun to point at the ceiling and Roos nearly fell off her crate. Adric let out a terrified squawk.

Oz pulled his head quickly out of the U-Haul and stood up. From inside, all James could see was his scaly chest. "Oh, you," he said from out of sight above them, sounding disgusted.

"You're going to want to hear me out," Ada's beak-distorted voice said. "There's something coming."

Roos began wrestling with her bonds. The wire cut deep into her wrists above the cuffs of the gloves.

"Oh, what the hell," James muttered. Oz could keep her under control, or at least keep her from taking off with both James and the spellgun. He drew his pocketknife and opened the wirecutter tool. Roos stilled immediately, spreading her hands to present the wire for clipping.

Between the horns and her height, she was too tall to stand up inside the U-Haul, but once she was free, she pushed past Oz and jumped down into the slushy snow at the edge of the road. She did that flicking thing with her hand and pulled the spellzooka out of thin air.

"Say, is she supposed to be free?" Oz asked, ducking his head back into James's view.

"I think we're in a temporary 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' situation." James cut Adric's bonds as well. "Attack me and I'll turn Oz loose on you, Kowalczyk. That applies to your sisters too."

Adric hissed wordlessly and scrambled out of the U-Haul.
